A Visit to the CBS Studios and the set of The Young and the Restless

07 Aug

Last week we ventured up to LA to visit the CBS Studios where we hung out with my friend Andrea Joel. I met Andrea through her sister Stephanie Joel, the marketing guru for Wiley and for Forensics For Dummies.

Andrea is the Set Decorator for the hit daytime series The Young and the Restless. Her sets are familiar to fans of the show.

Order in the court:

Where the judge hangs out:

Details, details: The court reporter’s station:

The Genoa City Athletic Club Set:

The Club Entrance:

The Bar:

The plates and napkins are produced by the graphics/design department and the attention to detail is apparent.

They even have their own hospital set up: Genoa City Memorial:

Waiting Room:

Nurses’ Station:

Hospital Bed:

Andrea is in charge of making each set accurate and believable. It is amazing the work, artistry, coordination, and attention to detail that is needed to create even the simplest set. A complex one is a true labor.

Where does Andrea get all the props she needs to create a believable hospital set? That would be from Frank Uchalik, the owner of Alpha Medical. We will visit him and his amazing prop warehouse in my next post.

Thanks for the behind the scenes peeks! They are very realistic. Now if we can get them not tor run a ventilator on a patient who is talking, that would be great. But that doesn’t have anything to do with set design and props does it?

Doug, did you know that Eileen Davidson, one of the lead actresses on Y&R, writes a mystery series set in the soap opera world?

And I do believe Bobbie Cimo, former program director of RWA/OC, pays the bills for the Y&R.

I’m surprised you were allowed to take photos. Some years ago I worked at a major Hollywood motion picture studios and neither employees or tourists were allowed to take photos of the sets, which seemed odd since the sets were seen on TV by millions of people. But these pictures are great. Thanks for sharing.

I would love to see these sites and how does one get on the list? The prop warehouse would be interesting and truly a great trip.

Many of the studios have tours. Otherwise you have to know someone. I simply got lucky meeting Stephanie and then her sister Andrea, two very gracious ladies.

Probably ten years ago, I was with a group at a studio and our last trip was at a prop warehouse. The articles were great to look at and I spent most of the tour there. The best stuff for me were the items from the 20’s to the 50’s. Thanks for the information.

I would love to know the brand and name of the bedding used in the ‘Geneva Pines’ room Lauren and Carmine shared. The same design was used the year before in a Vegas hotel scene.

Can you please tell me where Y&R purchased the black wall hanging (cut-out/ silhoutte style) of a man and a woman. It’s on the wall in Newman Ranch by the front door. I would love to get one for my husband on our anniversary. Thank You.

I’m curious about the cowboy boot that has been on Nick and Sharon Newman’s tackhouse mantle since they married. It looks like it has matches in it. I would be interested to hear from set design exactly what it is as it always catches my eye!
