Question and Answer: What Happens When Someone Is Hanged?

31 Mar

Q: I’ve got a couple of questions about hanging. I have a 140-pound man of slight build who has been hanged. His neck is not broken and thus he is strangling. His hands are bound. How long might he survive before death? Would he lose consciousness well before or shortly before death? If he is taken down before death, we would certainly see abrasion of the neck. What else would we see? If unconscious, would he revive quickly? Could his injuries be life-threatening? (I’m thinking of throat swelling here) I am looking at pre-modern society here. No ER or modern medicine.

A: In hangings, death results from asphyxia, which is the reduction of oxygen to the brain. Asphyxia in hangings results from the compression of the airways and the carotid arteries (the arteries on either side of the neck that carry blood to the brain) by a noose or other ligature that is pulled tight by the body weight. Thus, the victim must be completely or partially suspended.

Though the airway can be compressed and breathing can be interrupted, the real cause of loss of consciousness and death in most hangings is compression of the carotid arteries, which blocks blood flow to the brain. Except for judicial (legally directed) hangings, fractures of the cervical vertebrae (spinal bones of the neck) are uncommon. The reason is that these fractures require that the body drop a sufficient distance to break them. How far is this? The answer depends upon several factors. Individuals who are obese, have small neck musculature, or who have arthritis of the cervical spine may suffer neck fractures quite easily. Just the opposite is true for muscular, thick-necked persons. In judicial hangings, these factors are considered in gauging the distance of the drop. Too little drop and the condemned person is strangled to death, too far and he could be decapitated.

The neck markings seen after hanging depends mainly on the nature of the noose used. Soft nooses such as sheets may leave little of no markings. Bruises and abrasions are not common with softer devices. In fact, if the victim uses a soft noose and if the body is discovered fairly quickly and cut down, the ME may not be able to find any marks at all. A rope or cord may leave a very deep, distinct furrow in the victim’s neck. The longer the body hangs, the deeper the furrow. Abrasions and contusions are more common with these types of nooses. Occasionally the furrow and any associated bruising may reveal the braid pattern of a rope or the link configuration of a chain.

In hangings, the furrow and the bruising will follow a typical course. The pattern is that of an inverted V. The furrow tends to be diagonal across the neck with its high end where the knot is located. The knot is usually to one side. This means that if the knot is to the victim’s left side, the furrow will be lower on the neck and much deeper on the right side and will angle upward toward the left ear. Near the knot, the furrow may shallow and disappear. This pattern is due to the body hanging by the “bottom” of the nose.

Okay, enough about hangings, let’s get to your situation. Since the asphyxia is due to compression of the arteries and not the prevention of breathing, loss of consciousness occurs very quickly, usually in a minute or less and maybe as short as 20 seconds. The brain needs a continuous supply of blood and when this is interrupted, consciousness is lost quickly. Death may take from 1 to 5 or 6 minutes.

If your victim is found within 2 to 3 minutes, he would be unconscious but could wake up fairly quickly—a couple of minutes. Or not. Some people die in a minute while others can take many minutes. Go with a couple of minutes but not longer and you’ll be OK. He would probably have the typical V-shaped bruises on his neck and a furrow that would resolve over a half hour or so.

He could return completely to normal or be left with brain damage or even remain in a coma for hours, days, weeks, months, years, or forever. It all depends upon how long the brain was deprived of blood and luck. This varies from person to person.

Thank you for this article. I’m writing an historical western about the hangings of Ella Watson Averell and her husband James, and needed to know how the couple would suffer if they strangled instead of having their necks broken.

In some hangings there is facial swelling and discoloration and in others there is none. I assume that’s what you are asking.

i was curious if they were left hanging for say a couple of weeks would their feet swell and turn black and would it be possible that their stomach could bloat so badly that it splits. i ask this because i am writing a novel and i want it to be as realistic as possible.

Yes all of that is possible but what actually happens depends on many factors such as the corpse location, size and weight, and mostly the ambient temperature and environmental conditions. Hanging and decomposition are covered in great detail in my book FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES if you want to know more: http://www.dplylemd.com/book-details/forensics-for-dummies.html

Your head stops working almost at once when the blood is cut off. There have even been people whose shirt collar was too tight, who blacked out turning their head!

So the victims in your story would hardly have time to “suffer” at all. Maybe some flashes in the eyes, roaring in the ears, and lights-out.

Their face might turn red or blue, or it might not. A number of factors govern this.

Let me know about your book!

What you are describing is called Hypersensitive Carotid Sinus and it does rarely happen. In hangings it can be quick or slow and painful depending on exactly how much the blood supply to the brain is reduced by the noose. It varies from case to case. The new Q&A book is titled More Forensics and Fiction and will be out on April 1st.

I would be most appreciative, if when you had a moment, you would contact me.

If someone dies from hanging, does the blood pool in the feet and legs? And if they are cut down, and laid on their back, will the blood shift from their feet and legs and be noticeable only in their back and the back of their head? Thereby leaving their legs and feet without any evidence of the blood having pooled there previously?

My son died by hanging. His face was pale, not purple, and there was no swelling in his face. We found hime within a half hour of when he hung himself. When we tried to revive him we heard a gurgling sound and vomit came up into his mouth. Why is this? His ligature markings were very high. I pray he passed out very quickly and did not suffer. Is the lack of swelling in the face an indication that blood flow to the brain was interrupted and that he would have passed out quickly?

My Husband hung himself in our closet.. Where we would hang our clothes. He closed the closet door since closet was pretty spacious he had moved the clothes out of the way. He asked me to step outside to pick up something that someone was gonna leave for him. When I got back it must of been a min no more, he had already done it. After panicking out and asking for help, which no1 did. I finally called the ambulance cut the belt, and immediately began CPR the paramedic’s arrived fairy fast… & they started working on him as the police interrogated me I didn’t know what his status was. So anxious to know if I was able to save him or not. The paramedics took him in the ambulance. I wasn’t allowed to go cus I had my 2kids. (then my son was 3.. About 2weeks from turning 4….. & my daughter was 5months about 5days from turning 6months) I eventually was able to manage to go to his side.. Being connected to all kinds of machines. I broke down. I was shocked, confused, broken, alone, sad that he was connected to all of those machines. What did this mean?? I dint know if i manage to help him out or did I fail.. Later on I found out he did die, the paramedics & E.R Dr.s were able to bring him back to life. Medicine, machines and who knows what else. But he’s alive is all I thought.. So its been 8months 4days.. He is in a vegetative coma, he is not fully conscious of himself or his surroundings. Our kids & I visit him often, almost daily.. My son always asks for his daddy, and reminds himself about the memories he has with his daddy. I just keep asking myself why? And what could I have done differently to avoid him from doing it. If you are thinking of doing it please don’t. Please don’t. U may be hurting and might think its the only way out but its not. Someone loves you and would hate to see u suffer in any way or form. Please look for help. Cus my son n myself miss him n feel helpless cus there’s nothing we can do now to change anything. 😩😩😩😩😢😢😢😢😢

Patricia, I’m so sorry for your loss. These things are very hard to understand but they seem to happen all to often. And often, because people don’t understand the mechanism of what actually happens, that they can’t always change their minds because they lose consciousness must faster than most folks realize, a gesture, an experiment, or even simple curiosity can end in tragedy.

why would my brilliant son choose death even knowing I and his brother loved him? Was it because he hated himself? He blew up in anger many times to put holes in walls, and all my attempts to get help for him were ignored by so-called “experts” who did nothing except a paycheck for them. Kevin got lumber to saw double square boards he nailed to the ceiling the room end of carport; then jumped from the dryer to hang himself. This is unacceptable to me, his mother.all the excuses of MUSC, inadequate “doctors” social workers, pastors, etc. I was frantic trying to save his life, even not knowing his desperate state of mind. If you want more, I will tell you.

My wonderful, intelligent, beautiful son is dead. He was creative, honest, not unkind, yet seemingly detatached at times to appear indifferent others feelings as he was concerned his life. He told me “three times “I don’t love you” The words hurt, but it was honest. Kevin never lied. His Boss told me “Kevin is the most honest person I’ve known. I could leave him to work on million dollar homes East Bay Street in Charleston, SC to never worry anything stolen.” Over 200 people came to the funeral services for Kevin, including a radio station. Kevin was quiet, modest, sincere. He left notes for us; one to his brother ..he said was a “rare bird” He left notes in general to others that included me, his mother. No mention his father, Charles Lee Lewey. Kevin’s suicide traumatized the young adults in Charleston because they saw him as strong due to his big presence, yet he was fragile inside like crystal to be broken.

. I have a big.orange/white cat that sits with me when I cry for Kevin. This cat won’t leave my side until I’m in bed to sleep, then curls up beside me to purr. Friends tell me “Oh, that’s Kevin.” with a smile. Maybe so, maybe not, it works to give me peace enough to sleep a night …but still the dreams come to see Kevin alive with many people around him all talking, and he is teaching. It’s just dreams.

Just to note; American Red Cross sent me a letter that 36 surgeries were done using Kevin’s body and a letter from Lions Eye bank that a part of his eye helped a woman to see. So even as he died, he gave.

At any crime scene where there is loss of life, the crime scene belongs to the police but the corpse belongs to the coroner. The police should not disturb the body and the coroner/ME or his tech would cut down and remove the body.

Hanging does not require that the body be fully suspended, only that the person’s weight causes a noose to tighten and cut off blood flow to the brain.

That’s the danger of some of the games folks play–and autoerotic asphyxia situations. Most think that loss of consciousness (LOC) and death are from cutting off the ability to breath and, if so, surely they could extricate themselves when the need to breathe becomes acute. Unfortunately LOC and death come from obstruction of blood flow through the carotid arteries and LOC can arrive suddenly and unexpectedly so that victims are rendered unconscious and can’t save themselves.

The only reliable way to determine if a neck fracture occurred is by X-raying the corpse. Or doing a dissection of the neck.

Why don’t the people that do it and are lucky to be saved see what they have done and see the mark on the person that had to save them???

But some one had to have pushed him him to do that i mean when he was the nicest person you could ever meet. Everything he did he did it with. He was the one to bring you up when you feeling blue. He was always happy!!! I am only 12 years old and i may not under stand what was going through is mind when he did in but it had to be really bad to give up on his wife and his son hand the rest of his family. He had to have be wasted when he did it. But my question is could some one have helped him hang himself?

A bruise, medically called a contusion, happens when trauma, pressure, or some other insult damages the small capillaries within the tissues and blood seeps out of these tiny vessels and into the tissues. This stains the tissues the darker blue/gray that we associate with contusions. Sometimes the trauma causes the contusion to be deeper rather than near the surface and it takes time for the blood to seep upward through the tissues and become visible. This usually begins quickly, within a few minutes, and may progress over the next hour or so so that bruises become more prominent on a corpse after some time. A contusion looks more or less the same on a corpse as it does on a living person though perhaps it might appear a little darker because the tissue surrounding it or paler due to lack of blood supply in the corpse.

I’m sorry for your loss. Bodies feel cool almost immediately as the blood flow to the skin ceases. Consciousness can be lost in 20 seconds–even less—in some.

I found my only son hanging from the basement rafter nov. 29. I received his autopsy report today,I remember seeing clear slobber coming down his mouth but the report said puck was on his face I don’t remember that but after all I was in shock I wasn’t able to walk around to see the other side of his face cause I could tell he was gone by how his eyes looked, they were open but lifeless ,and his hands were blue. The conner said he was gone for 10 hours, but family members said he was up til about 4 in the morning so they believe six hours,it’s just been a defastating time for me I just lost my only son 18 years old.

Elizabeth–I’m sorry for your loss. I’ve had folks near and dear to me commit suicide in the past and it’s never easy. And hard to understand what pushed them to that point. Often the signs that the person is troubled and considering this solution aren’t there. And the question is always out there—was it really an attempt or what we call in medicine a gesture—but one that went wrong. And sometimes it’s kids simply experimenting. Unfortunately, we never truly know. The posts on my blog are intended for crime writers but in this one the hope was also that readers would see just how easy it is to make a mistake. That the physiology of the situation might not allow them a second chance. It’s always so sad and confusing. Again, I’m sorry for your loss. As they say, time will help, but the loss never truly goes away.

As I spend the day surviving the one year anniversary of my amazing 28 year old son’s suicide by hanging, I remain tortured by the uncertainty of how long he may have suffered. And worse, was the passage of 5 days before he was discovered. To each and every Mom who is suffering with the pain of losing a child, I am sorry for your losses. You are all in my thoughts as only someone who is determined to survive this pain can understand the depth of your loss. Thank you for giving some limited hope that my precious son felt no physical pain in his last moments of life.

My Son passed very quickly. I got to him within a few minutes. His feet could reach the floor & I do not have an idea how he did this to himself, Daughter nor Me. He promised He would never do anything like that . But I was out side the door. He said in a different voice Mom go in the house. I refused tried getting the door opened begged told him I love him please let me in. I heard a sound & busted the window out. He looked like himself except his eyes were fixed and his lips were slightly purple. I got him cut down. But the rope was just sitting under his chin . I do not know how I was not inside before hand. It was not long. I got him down. Met got him back. He was so happy that day before someone hurt his heart. He had a herniated brain & died two days later. God hel Us All. What could I do more

      It won’t.

If anything, the face would look swollen, and blue or black, depending on how severely the neck’s blood-vessels were squeezed.

I’m so confused my nephew was only 31. 4 small daughters happy everyday loved his babies but I get a phone call 01/29/16 by my sister saying my nephew hung himself and died. There was no investigation the house was not secured to take any evidence his so called friend found him even though this friend was seeing the mother of his children they would not let us see his body until after he was inbombed and was ready for viewing before the funeral. The only so called evidence they had was the rope he had around his neck but to our findings the next day after this tradrady we went by his house and what did we find laying in the back yard IT WAS A BROW PAPER BAG MARKED EVIDENCE WITH THE ROPE IN IT. How is that to be explained and no autopsy was done we asked for it to be done but they said no sense in it and yes he was doing drugs and sadly the cops where he lived are involved in the drug activities. My sister is not doing well with thus I just wished there was something we could do for her to have closer.we really believe in our hearts he was murdered but no way to prove it.

You could have demanded an autopsy or even gotten your own person. When a Corner takes a body they do a blood test for Drugs & Alchol. And always have a blood Card. We had My Son’s hair folicals tested to show he was nott on drugs. It was important to me and him I know!!! I would hire my own forensic scientist if a Judge will not have this taken care of. Just my opinion . It would prove suiside or Murder.

Hi Lyle, I have a question:

Why has the knot to be at the back of your head (suspension hanging) ? If you put the knot in front, then you could breath freely while compression of the carotid arteries should render you unconscious.
But apparently from what I read, this is rather unsuccessful, why is that ?

The knot usually ends up on one side of the neck or the other and not the back of the neck—but not always–with the head lolled to the other side. That’s what makes the ligature marks angle upward toward the ear on that side. It has to do with the physics of situation.

Does the body drain out blood from the body when hanging for not min but days. Mybuncle was found hanging in his bedromm from his ceiling fan atvtheend of his bed not above his bed. In Florida his apartment had no ac on and itbwas a bad scene. His whole bed was saturated in blood. I’m feeling like it was more than suicide. Could you please give me some insight to my question. In a hanging death without any other trauma the blood does not leave the body but it does settle in the dependent areas—legs, arms, etc.

I read the article and comments. Good people. I tried to hang myself once in a local park where I lived. I had brought the rope and chose the tree branch I thought was thick enough to handle my 175 lbs. I was at the right height at about 7 feet so it wouldn’t allow me to change my mind. I am 6 feet tall. I climbed, made sure the rope was sturdy and eased in. I was hanging for about 5 seconds but the branch broke off. It was dark so I couldn’t estimate the branch strength before making the attempt. I remember my head suddenly felt like it was about to explode and I had ringing in my ears while I was hanging. I guess luckily the branch broke off and fell. It was a large branch and nearly missed me on its way down. My head was throbbing for a little while and I felt so unemotional but my neck hurt. I decided to do this again and kept the suicide note and rope until I changed my mind 2 weeks later. I was 20 years old in Seattle.
I sometimes think I should have succeeded. I always try to help people but the society is just so superficial and truly evil. I’ve deployed to Iraq since (3.5 years I spent there) and other parts of the world and noticed that people are generally just selfish. I’m thinking next time I’ll succeed. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I don’t want to cause pain to my small son who is learning to talk and my beautiful wife. I also think that human nature is filled with greed and lust for power, but I just don’t give a fuck about rank anymore but I love to see people who are genuinely happy and the more I try to help them feel good the greater the bouts of depression I experience several days later.
I kept the static line that used to always open my parachute from the airborne unit, I certainly know it will holdnmybweight and cross me over to the other side. There is no difference between dying sooner or later – the result is the exact same. The truth is we are a mere speck on a time continuum.

I know you wrote this a while back Alex. Yes humans are horrible, but there is beauty all around. My husband, stepfather to my 10 year old and father to our 5 year old, hung himself in our bedroom 12 June 2018. Our children are DEVASTATED as am I. My heart aches daily. The worst is the rejection and hurt experienced by the boys. Your family NEEDS you, you are wanted and loved. I too have felt suicidal. I tried and failed when I was 23. The hurt my mother experienced then helped me to not consider it again. I still have thoughts, but wont because the kids need me and I love them too much to hurt them. The thought that the world is better off if we kill ourselves is incorrect.

Usually only bruises but if the rope, etc abraded the skin of the neck then scars could form on survivors. Of course no scarring can occur on a corpse because scar formation is an active process.

This was incredibly informative and useful. I do have a quick question about something you briefly mentioned – you said if a hanging victim dropped too far, they could be decapitated. Is it possible for someone to be pushed from a very high place (the side of a cliff, for example) and not lose his head when the rope pulls taut?

Not true. Though anything can happen, drooling blood would be very unusual and would likely require some other trauma to the teeth or mouth and not just hanging.

It does happen rarely. Saliva escapes because the person is unable to swallow (or breathe). Pressure in the head causing bleeding from the mouth, nose, or even ears, results from squeezing off the neck and has been (rarely) documented.

Hello D.P. Lyle, MD, I have a question.
In a story I am writing an 18 year old girl who is 165cm tall and weighs about 52 kilos is left hanging for about two minutes by a rope. She was unconscious, but very briefly and the attempt at resuscitation was completely successful. The place where she is in is nowhere near a hospital and there is no signal so the ambulance can’t be called, but she is currently living and breathing. What would happen to her straight after the resuscitation? Will there be coughing? Vomiting? Excretion? How long would it take for the mark on her neck to go away and for her to be able to stand up again without feeling light-headed if she had a healthy diet and did a moderate amount of exercise (5×30 minutes per week)?

It takes very little effort to hang yourself, you don’t have to stop the air flow, only the blood flow in the arteries along side the throat. It takes very little pressure on the arteries to stop the blood flow.
You could kill yourself by pushing on the arteries if you could keep your grip after blacking out, but you can’t.
You could use a zip tie around your neck and lay down and black it and then die.
You could sit in a chair and put a rope around your neck and hang a weight from the rope and let it hang on the back side of the chair.
You could sit on the floor and put a rope over the door handle and pull it just tight enough to cut off the blood flow, just sit on the end of the rope.
I started to black out and chickened out.

When CPR is then in motion, why will the body heat up again and a faint pulse can be felt? Can you tell me that this person, if he/she lived, would have been brain-dead? What does these signs mean?

Thank you for (most of) the intellectual answers. It was difficult to research such a question. However, after reading this, my “gut” feelings are medically correct. I now understand and truly believe that my brother-n-law died from being unconscious and the lack of oxygen to his brain. I am still disturbed by one puzzling question (and, yes, I understand you cannot answer questions based on real life experiences.) Let’s say, hypothetically, someone hangs themselves on their knees and when they were found, only minutes later, they had fallen to the ground and the rope was unbound. Obviously the rope was pulled down by they weight of the body, after losing consciousness, however, if the rope wasn’t tied to either the object the individual hung himself on his knees by or around the individuals neck and wasn’t a noose; would he have had to spun on his knees to make the rope tight enough to loose consciousness?

*And just a side note: My genuine condolences to all who have lost a loved one to suicide. I understand that even with all of the medical answers can be given (and I am grateful,) however, the anguish is forever heartbreaking, confusing and just so incredibly sad. I pray for all the families and loved ones who mourn suffer. I do hope one day we will all of our own types of “closure” and love each day happy and to its fullest.

Not sure I can see what you are describing—if the far end wasn’t attached and the near end wasn’t a noose, there would be no tension produced so there should be no effect.

A hanging just occurred when the victim was found with blood coming out of his mouth. Quite a bit to be exact. He hung himself from a bathroom door. You stated this was extremely rare. Can you comment further how this could be. The explanation given was that this was a normal occurrence with hanging victims, so I am puzzled.

It’s rare but not impossible. I can’t comment on the case you describe as I know nothing about it but such bleeding typically means that some trauma happened to the mouth or oral cavity prior to or during the hanging process.

My son died he was 25 we are forever broken …. Anyone considering dying from suicide please talk to someone .. Anyone .. Your mind can play tricks making you think you will be better off dead your mind can make you believe that you would be doing your family or friends a favour maybe because of depression drug or alcohol use … Believe me my son had drug problems police often called at house trouble at school the list goes on … We are devastated .. There isn’t actually a word to describe the unbearable loss … I would rather he be here and still trying hopefully succeeding to help him but he’s gone 💔💔💔. Anyone considering suicide be aware that by taking your life IT PUTS YOUR BROTHERS SISTERS PARENTS GRANDPARENTS AT AN INCREASED RISK OF THEM TAKING THEIR LIVES IN THIS WAY !!!! This is a fact not fiction

      Depends.

Although it is thought that a hanged body’s eyes swell out of the head, and the tongue sticks out, this often does not occur. Sometimes the body’s eyes just stay open and dead; sometimes they roll back in the head; sometimes the face turns blue or black, but there are instances where the hanged face just looks asleep.

    Couple of questions:

    – If decreased blood flow to the heart and lack of oxygen causes a heart attack and/or cardiac arrest, shouldn’t these then not be common in suspension hangings ?

    – Why do some people’s face turn blue, is it because the carotid arteries are not constricted (enough) ?

    – I read Robin Willams used a belt, would this make a difference compared to using a rope ? I mean, would it take longer to pass out since constriction of the arteries is prolly less severe than in case of a rope?

    – Some sites say that after you pass out you slowly and painfully suffocate to death. Shouldn’t you feel no pain once you’re unconscious ?

A heart attack–myocardial infarction or MI–is caused by a plugged artery due to a clot so that’s entirely diffeent mechanism than hanging. Yes, someone could suffer an MI during hanging but that would be rare. Some folks do have congestion and a bluing of the face and neck and this is due to venous blood being trapped in the head and neck by the obstruction of the veins that drain those areas. Not always though. The time it takes to lose consciousness is more due to the degree of carotid compression than the nature of the ligature. A rope or a belt or anything could cause a fairly quick or a prolonged time period to loss of consciousness. If the carotid compression is incomplete, then death can come more slowly from obstruction of the air passages–that could take many minutes.

What if there’s insufficient compression of both the carotid arteries and the windpipe, does this means you will suffer endlessly, until someone finally finds you?

Wouldn’t compression of the jugular veins contribute to passing out or death ?

Wouldn’t you get a stroke, either by reduced cerebral bloodflow or bleeding (by increased pressure in the head) ? Would you experience vomiting and severe headache ?

        In judicial hanging:

        – why is the noose not put tight around the neck ?

        – breaking the neck makes you loose consciousness in 0.5 s, but when you would be decapitated it might take 2-3 s. Why this difference ?

        – How much would the rope on average stretch ?

COmpression of the jugulars means little as theya re veins and take blood AWAY from the brain–it’s the carotids that count. Consciousness is lost very quickly in each of these sutuations in most casees but a fracture of the neck does not always mean damage to the spinal cord and if not the victim will be neurologically OK and awake. The weight of the body is more than enough to collapse the carotids. Decaptitaion during hanging is rare and only happens if the weight of the person and the length of the drop are too much. Ropes don’t stretch to any great degree and it matters little how tight the noose is just so it’s enough that the perosn doesn’t slip through.

A family member who was not , st least yo the families knowledge, recently
“HUNG THEMSELF” USING. A TYPICAL ROPE TIED NOOSE. CORONERS REPIRT CLAIMS THE MEMBER DID NIT ACTUALLY DIE FROM ” HANGING ” BUT , ACCORDING TO THE CORONERS REPORT , DIED OF STRANGULATION.
I HAVE A QUESTION: IF THE VICTOM WAS APPROXIMATELY 5’7″ and weighed approximately , I would think the most,
140-145 pounds, how high off the floor would this person had to be, in order to die of strangulation??according to the person who found this individual, the victim was ” blue” when found.
The victim was cut down from the noose , as soon as noticed, however, the person that found him first called 911 and followed their instructions , which were to cut the victim free from the noose , and try CPR. After telling 911 the victim was blue, the individual who found the victim, did not administer CPR because the victim was ” blue” Not to administer CPR, was made by the individual who found the victim.
This took time for the victim to prepare for this “hanging” the victim had to first get the noose, which was already tied
( just happened to have a tied professional noose) then get a nail, which was hammered into a doorway( frame) and put the noose around the neck.
This was all done in a period of about 10 -15minutes( less than more)
    Back to my questions
#1. How high off the floor would it take to be strangled
#2 Being that the victim was found “blue”
If CPR was administered , could the victim have had the chance of survival??
    This is a true” happening”
Trying to figure this out .How the victims
“FINDER” , did not or could not have helped the victim to survive and if the victim survived, what are the chances of brain damage. Remember, this all was prepared , other than tying the noose around the neck, within approximately 10-15 minutes
#3 how long would the victim have had to turn ” blue”
Thank you and I hope to hear back from you. This is all so suspicious

I have a slightly different series of questions than most who have posted here. This is not about anyone in particular, but is about the breaking of the neck, completely snapping the bone in two. Whether it be from a fall and accident, a murder, a hanging or a suicide it doesn’t matter.
Q1-When the neck is broken completely in two does the victim die immediately and is he rendered instantly unconscious of the pain and of the brain death that follows?
Q2-In the event that the neck has been broken completely in two, is it possible for the lower body to move such as in death contortions and stretching and twitching and trembling of it’s own accord without signals from the severed connection to the brain?
Q3- Is the death by a broken neck similar to strangulation or asphyxiation?

I’ve reached the closing stages of my first novel and I want the villain to drug the protagonist and then fake a partially suspended hanging from a garden tree. I want the protagonist to survive so I could have the branch break. Is it also possible that the belt or sheet used may not be in the right position and so does not cause death or brain damage, and are some ligatures less efficient?
    Thanks

It’s mostly a matter of the degree of suspension and the time but wider and softer ligatures are in general less likely to apply the needed focal pressure to obstruct the carotids. But anything is possible. Death and the degree of brain insult in survivors depends on how severe and how long this obstruction is applied.

A fixed knot also does not close around the neck, and so would allow breathing and bloodflow, therefore life, once the weight on it was released.

The answer provided some excellent information. I’m writing a book and have a few questions. When someone discovers that a loved one has hung themselves what is the first thing you should do? Other than support their weight and cut them down and perform CPR? Once someone calls 911 and the ambulance arrives what does the EMT do to to attempt to revive the victim? And what are the steps that happen next after the victim is taken to the hospital? And assuming they survive what would they expect? Also how long are they “out” before they wake up?

This is a huge question and has many possible answers so it’s impossible to make a blanket statement. The symptoms depend on the exact nature of the injury to the brain from lack of oxygen and this can be anything from minor and almost not noticeable to permanent coma to death.

I sorry to hear that. Yes, it’s possible. Unfortunately, hanging doesn’t require complete suspension but rather just enough weight so that the rope compresses the carotid arteries. Simply leaning forward enough can do it. This is how many accidental hanging deaths occur.

The face can turn a dark bluish/purplish in some cases. Vomiting is less likely as the ligature would prevent much of that.

They said A man was crying for help the next call was he was not responding but yet they found him in a room with a cable wire around his neck. But it does not add up his eye was knocked out of socket there was no Burns around the neck from the cable wire and what is the Clincher is he was sitting on the floor the door knob murder was practically above his head it clearly does not add up I’m trying to understand this thing about suicide vs murder

Unfortonately, hanging doe snot require complete suspension only that the body weight is suffis=cient to compression the carotid arteries. This often is what happens in accidental deaths from hanging.

Vomiting would be extremely rare, as in death by hanging the throat is closed.

Bleeding from the mouth, nose or ears is rare, but can occur owing to blockage of blood inside the head. The noose could also cause the neck skin to bleed.

I’m curious if a person who is hanging had the ability to raise their hands to possibly pull at the noose.
Your explanation is good, essentially, if the person losses consciousness within a minute, then the time frame is small.
Then again, a minute can be a long time in those circumstances.
Would the person be able to raise their hands or would use of their extremities be list immediately as the brain tries to save minor organs?
Also, after 3 days in the summer, would it be possible to determine whether the person hung themselves or if it were done while the person was unconscious?

Yes, it would be possible for someone to save themselves by “climbing the rope” enough to get their head out of the noose but as you said the timeframe is narrow. Consciousness can be lost quickly and then the victim could do nothing. The cause of death would be asphyxiation whether the victim hanged themselves or was hanged by someone else while unconscious from another cause. SO it would look the same at autopsy for the most part. But if the victim was dead from some other cause when hanged, then the ME should be able to tell the hanging was post-mortem–no bruising of the neck as corpses don’t easily bruise. Unless the corpse was so decayed that the soft tissues were too damaged to tell–as can happen in 3 days in a very warm environment.
