Stupid Criminals: Stephfon Bennett

24 Jan

This will be the first installment of a recurring series that I am titling Stupid Criminals. There are a lot of them out there and when you hear about them sometimes you just have to shake your head. On 1-7-10, I posted the story of the less than clever serial killer LaMarques Devon McWilliams. He would easily fit into this category.

So would Stephfon Bennett.

It seems that Bennett and a couple of his buddies decided to pull off a robbery and they chose Daniel Martinez Batista and Diana Martinez as their victims. They approached them outside their apartment building and walked away with a wallet and purse. A successful outing for the larcenous crew. But apparently Bennett found Diana very attractive so he returned to the apartment to ask her out for a date. She of course recognized him as one of the robbers and the police were summoned and Bennett was hauled away.

Some people are just not bright enough to be successful criminals.

    Dr. Lyle:
I am always entertained and informed by your blogs.

This ranked right up there with the guy who went into a convenience store and wrote the note “Give me all your money” on a bank deposit slip.
He was arrested within half an hour because, of course, his address was right there.

I have one: when I was in college, the local bank was robbed. It was located in a shopping mall. The police found the robber in the food court enjoying his lunch. I kind of thought the whole point of robbing a bank was to get away with the money, but I’m not a professional.

Or the one that used a deposit slip from the bank across the street to rob the other bank? I work in a convenience store and I know of a case that actually happened in our store. The man walked in tried to rob the cashier, an older woman in her 70’s. She talked him out of it gave him $20 out of her wallet and he left the drink he’d brought to the counter on the pretense of buying sitting on the counter. They caught him and he was given extra sentence because of our cashier’s age. I wasn’t there but my boss told me about it. I thought it was so funny scary but funny. How stupid to leave evidence right there. NOw we have surveillance cameras and 4 of them are on a TV screen right above our counter you can watch yourself. The rest are not available to see except by certain folks.
